Whether you have previous Motivational Interviewing (MI) training and could benefit from a refresher, or are learning about MI for the first time, this training is designed from a strengths based learning perspective to support the journey of MI integration. We explore the theories that support MI and its efficacy (Psychological Reactance, Social Dominance Theory), and look at MI from an evolutionally perspective in order to build a deeper understanding of the dynamics at play within the worker/client relationship. We learn about, and work to integrate the core elements of MI (MI SPIRIT, Change Talk, OARS, 4 Processes) into practice through: experiential exercises, reflecting/debriefing personal and professional experiences related to change, and apply this insight into work with people experiencing homelessness. This 12-hour course is designed to take place over 4 weeks (four 3-hour sessions) to support the integration of MI into practice. Thursday mornings, 9am – 12 noon

A residual effect from a primary loss, secondary losses are usually non-death related, such as loss of stability, financial independence, purpose, and support systems (to name a few). These secondary losses often go unrecognized with their significance overlooked, leaving people to at times feel ashamed, alone, invalidated, and alienated. This interactive session will explain the domino effects that occur after a primary loss. Participants to this session will learn how secondary losses are compounded to add to a griever’s overwhelming primary loss, in addition to learning about how they can better support grievers, equipped with an understanding of the intricacies of secondary losses.

The Ottawa Paramedic Service, in partnership with The Ottawa Hospital, has launched the Mental Wellbeing Response Team. This new initiative aims to improve short- and long-term health outcomes for emergency calls received by the Ottawa Paramedic Service through 9-1-1 that are non-violent and non-criminal, and where mental health and substance use are contributing factors. The Team includes a specially trained City paramedic partnered with a mental health professional, such as a registered social worker from The Ottawa Hospital, a partner organization. The paramedic does the medical assessment and provides any necessary medical treatment while the mental health professional conducts a mental health assessment, develops a care plan, provides safety planning, and can even schedule follow-up care as needed. Come learn about Ottawa’s Mental Wellbeing Response Team and how they can help!

DESCRIPTION PART ONE (9:00 -
10:50): Helping professionals can easily feel overwhelmed and
exhausted as a result of the stress they experience from juggling complex work
and demanding personal lives. This chronic stress is a fast track to burnout
which can be debilitating and very painful. This workshop focuses on revealing
the real experience of stress and burnout for helpers while introducing
fundamental daily practices that we can all do to help process our stress in
order to prevent burnout. OBJECTIVES: • Develop a deeper understanding of
stress and burnout • Create an understanding of our physiological reactions to
stress and the warning signs for burnout • Introduce practical strategies for
completing the stress cycle and reducing the risk of burnout
DESCRIPTION PART TWO (11:00 – 12:00): This supportive group activity will be a unique opportunity to process experiences related to our helper roles and connect with peers in a comfortable, confidential setting. Debriefing with peers helps mitigate the stress impact from our jobs and has proven to be one of the most beneficial methods of preventing occupational stress issues. We take the time to discuss the challenges that come with frontline work and provide support and education about our own psychological well-being.

DESCRIPTION PART ONE 9:00 –
10:50: Helping
professionals provide all kinds of different support but their common ground is
that they all offer compassion so generously. Yet, being a helper can be very
demanding and difficult which can cause emotional distress and compassion
fatigue. It is totally natural but there are ways that helpers can improve
stress resiliency and revitalize compassion through self-care. This workshop
will offer strategies to recognize compassion fatigue and develop sustainable
self-care commitments that can transform compassion fatigue into compassion
satisfaction. OBJECTIVES: • Describe compassion fatigue and empathy-based
stress • Identify warning signs of compassion fatigue • Introduce compassion
fatigue assessment and evaluation tools • Provide strategies for enhancing
compassion satisfaction
DESCRIPTION PART TWO 11:00 – 12:00: This supportive group activity will be a unique opportunity to process experiences related to our helper roles and connect with peers in a comfortable, confidential setting. Being strength-based is essential in maximizing the resiliency of the people supported, and reorients supports away from a deficit orientation to one that builds on unique talents, assets, attributes, knowledge, characteristics, traits and dreams. In this one hour recorded webinar, “being strength-based” is defined, pragmatically demonstrates how to maintain a strength-based approach to engaging people who experience homelessness, articulates what a strength-based case plan aims to accomplish, how being strength-based should inform policy development, and how a strength-based orientation informs how to conduct evaluation and what to do with results from evaluation.

Tue 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Part One 9:00 - 11:00: Research shows that effective and frequent debriefing opportunities significantly reduces the risk of secondary traumatic stress symptoms for professionals working in trauma-exposed environments. Naturally, helping professionals want to talk about the difficult things they see and hear, however, sometimes instead of effectively debriefing, these conversations seem more like venting and offloading. With a few simple techniques, helpers can transform these conversations into helpful dialogue for processing and reflecting on trauma exposure while reducing the risk of transferring secondary trauma onto others. OBJECTIVES: • Understand the signs of vicarious trauma and secondary traumatic stress • Introduce the 4 Low Impact Debriefing communication guidelines • Identify distinct purposes of effective debriefing • Explore strategies for reducing the risk of vicarious trauma.
Description Part Two 11:00 – 12:00: Using the skills described in the first part of this program this supportive group activity will be a unique opportunity to process experiences related to our helper roles and connect with peers in a comfortable, confidential setting.
