Motivational Interviewing is a prerequisite for this program: Relapse is likely to occur for all of us on our way to
successfully changing an aspect of our behaviour. This workshop is based on
Marlatt's Relapse Prevention Model which identifies factors that increase and
decrease someone’s risk for relapse, describes the relapse process, and
provides helpful guidance in how to work with someone who has slipped or
relapsed to help them get back on track.
This program is presented by Dr Steve Hotz.

Motivational Interviewing is an approach to
counselling that helps to support people explore the idea of change and connect
with their own sources of motivation.
It’s a way we can engage with those who are struggling with issues and
circumstances that present barriers to contemplating and committing to change.
M.I. is goal-oriented and client-centred, it gives people the opportunity to
identify and work through what keeps them stuck despite their deep knowledge
and best intentions.
This workshop will help you and your clients
understand the factors that determine readiness to change, identify their level
of readiness and set counselling goals accordingly. It will provide you with a
framework for counselling that allows you to meet them where they’re at and
collaborate with them on their journey.

Research shows that effective and frequent debriefing opportunities significantly reduces the risk of secondary traumatic stress symptoms for professionals working in trauma-exposed environments. Naturally, helping professionals want to talk about the difficult things they see and hear, however, sometimes instead of effectively debriefing, these conversations seem more like venting and offloading. With a few simple techniques, helpers can transform these conversations into helpful dialogue for processing and reflecting on trauma exposure while reducing the risk of transferring secondary trauma onto others. OBJECTIVES: • Understand the signs of vicarious trauma and secondary traumatic stress • Introduce the 4 Low Impact Debriefing communication guidelines • Identify distinct purposes of effective debriefing • Explore strategies for reducing the risk of vicarious trauma.

In this workshop we will first look at the signs that
indicate that someone might be experiencing a mental health crisis and how to
recognize they may need some support. We will then explore active communication
skills that front-line workers can use to help de-escalate someone in crisis,
open safe conversations about stigmatized subjects, and deepen the relationship
and social support available to the person who is struggling. We will close
with a short discussion of front-line workers' mental health and the importance
of sustainable self-care when caring for individuals in crisis over the long

Being strength-based is essential in maximizing the resiliency of the people supported, and reorients supports away from a deficit orientation to one that builds on unique talents, assets, attributes, knowledge, characteristics, traits and dreams. In this one hour recorded webinar, “being strength-based” is defined, pragmatically demonstrates how to maintain a strength-based approach to engaging people who experience homelessness, articulates what a strength-based case plan aims to accomplish, how being strength-based should inform policy development, and how a strength-based orientation informs how to conduct evaluation and what to do with results from evaluation.
